Sunset Vet’s Community Sterilisation Days
It has been a busy February for Sunset Vet's social/community programme, with 4 sterilisation days in a single week!
Sterilisation is vital to control the population of Bali's amazing and iconic street dog, and particularly to stop puppies (usually female) of unwanted litters being dumped on the beach or in the trash, and the tremendous suffering that entails. Meanwhile vaccination against rabies is the only proven way to achieve the goal of eradicating the fatal virus from the island.
Sunset Vet works with a number of wonderful local organisations including Pro Steril Indonesia, Jet Set Petz, Bali Adoption Rehabilitation Centre and Global Canine Cavalry to provide doctors, medicines and equipment for these days, as well as coordinating with government and other stakeholders. Some days involve setting up surgical tables in a local community building and others involve going door to door.
Yesterday's event took place at Old Man's (Batu Bolong Beach), Canggu and resulted in:
67 dogs & cats being vaccinated for rabies
23 dogs & cats being sterilised
The team were able to catch, vaccinate and sterilise almost all of the parking lot and beach dogs, although it's most certainly an ongoing challenge as so many dogs are dumped in this area.
